ANTIQUE-STYLE CHANDELIERS AND PENDANTS
What was old is new again
Lately, an array of glamorous antique-style chandeliers and pendants has been sweeping the interior design world. Following the comfortable form and function trend so evident over the last year, modern trends will continue with the "old is new" attitude into 2012, while blending in a bit of traditional and 21st Century influences. Melissa Davidson from The Lighting Warehouse offers an overview on this dazzling and elegant growing lighting trend.

LEDS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
LED strip lights / gadgets
LED lights are the lights of the future. They are energy-efficient and provide a very cost-effective source of illumination, explains Melissa Davidson, from The Lighting Warehouse: "Whilst CFL's use 20% of the energy that traditional incandescent globes use , LEDs are the future because they are estimated to use approximately 10% of the energy of the incandescent globe. This then translates into an optimum energy saving of up 90%.

LED STRIP LIGHTS
The best strip in town!
LED strip lights are currently all the rage and it is understandable why – they provide an endless source of practical and aesthetically appealing interior and outdoor design possibilities due to their wide range of applications.

LED strip lights are beautiful and practical – they can illuminate virtually any surface or features in and around the home, says Melissa Davidson from The Lighting Warehouse: "LED strip lights are definitely one of the most versatile lighting products on the market today – whether you require backlighting, ambient or task lighting, or the ability to provide lighting in hard-to-reach places – LED strip lights are the answer."

SPOTLIGHTS
The best strip in town!
The traditional method of lighting a room – a single central pendant light hanging from the ceiling – leaves a lot to be desired. True, the light levels in the room may be enough for most purposes, but a single bulb makes for a very stark lighting scheme with little atmosphere.

"There are many ways of creating atmosphere using carefully planned lighting systems, but one of the most cost effective and efficient ways is to plan your lighting around the use of spotlights," explains Melissa Davidson from The Lighting Warehouse.

TWILIGHT SWITCH SYSTEM
Securing your home when you are away
With crime statistics the way they are, every South African leaving their most precious assets and v aluables behind in an unoccupied home is often left wondering about how safe these belongings actually are.

The truth of the matter is that most burglars tend to operate on an opportunist basis - they are more likely to pick a home where their movements will be less easily detected, and an unoccupied home provides the ideal opportunity. Here they will be able to break in at their leisure, take what they want, load it up and leave, without being detected. Traditional security measures such as burglar bars, high walls and fences, security gates and alarm systems are all great deterrents, but lighting is another security measure that often doesn't get its dues.

SOLAR LIGHTING
Brighten up your garden
Solar lights can be a great addition to any outdoor area - turning your garden into a magical night-time landscape. Melissa Davidson, from The Lighting Warehouse, offers some tips on what to look for when selecting outdoor solar light fittings for your garden.

Modern solar lights are much more than the innovative gadgets they used to be a few years back, says Melissa Davidson, from The Lighting Warehouse: "Today, solar lights come in a plethora of various styles and designs; they are practical, functional, long-lasting, virtually maintenance-free and affordable - making them a great choice for your outdoor lighting needs."

KITCHEN LIGHTING
Add some culinary sparkle
Planning kitchen lighting is as important to designing and remodeling a kitchen as picking out the cabinetry and appliances; however it is one undertaking that is often overlooked.

Says Melissa Davidson from The Lighting Warehouse: “The kitchen of today is often the busiest room in the home – it is where we cook, eat, socialise, and often work. The fact that this room has become a multi-functional space is clearly reflected in how modern designs often incorporate some kind of open-plan layout between the kitchen and the living areas. In line with this new and evolving trend, the lighting design in a kitchen is very important as it needs to accommodate various activities and functions in both an aesthetically pleasing and a functional manner.”

FLOODLIGHTS
Shining through
Melissa Davidson from The Lighting Warehouse provides an overview on the benefits of installing floodlighting around the home.

Floodlights are high intensity lights that can last a long period of time when in use, explains Melissa Davidson from The Lighting Warehouse: “Installing outdoor floodlights is an easy and inexpensive home improvement project that will give your home’s exterior an inviting ambience, increased functionality and added security at night.”

WIRE LIGHTING SYSTEMS
With a little bit of tension...
Wire lighting systems have emerged as a contemporary design favourite due to their sleek, unobtrusive styling and functionality, as well their extraordinary ability to be installed in some of the most challenging spaces.

Says Melissa Davidson from The Lighting Warehouse: “Wire lighting systems are often used in areas where it would be a challenge to mount other types of lighting, such as in rooms with very high ceilings, cathedral or vaulted ceilings and ceilings interrupted by soffits, beams or exposed ductwork. For a typically South African application – think thatched roofs, bomas or lapas. In these situations, short runs of under six metres, may characteristically be installed from wall to wall without any vertical support at all.

BATHROOM LIGHTING
Let There Be Light
Of all the rooms in the house, the bathroom requires the most flexible lighting scheme. It should be bright enough to enable you to apply make-up or shave, but you don't want to take a relaxing bath under a white fluorescent light. It must also be safe.

“Different forms of lighting can be used to completely transform the look and ambience of a bathroom – from a bright and functional area to a softly lit, relaxing spa-like space. In fact, a cleverly designed lighting design can offer you the best of both,” explains Melissa Davidson from The Lighting Warehouse.

CHANDELIERS
Glamorous Grandeur
The chandelier used to be a mark of a person’s arrival into the upper echelons of high society. Clad in twinkling crystal, chandeliers would greet you decorously in the foyer and reception rooms of any well-appointed home. Traditionally, it was rare to find a chandelier in any other room, and even more rare to find one in a starter home. However, times have changed, says Melissa Davidson from The Lighting Warehouse: “Today, there has been a popularity explosion with regards to the glam-slam, old world charm of chandeliers and they are being used in practically any room in the home – from modest homes to magnificent mansions.”

OUTDOOR LIGHTING
Shedding some light
With spring in the air, more and more homeowners are looking for ways to incorporate their home’s outdoor areas into their everyday lifestyle, and garden lighting offers the ideal solution.

A well designed outdoor lighting scheme can extend the usable hours of any garden – no longer will outdoor activities such as entertaining al fresco, swimming, dining or just relaxing on the patio be curtailed when the sun sets. Says Melissa Davidson from leading lighting suppliers, The Lighting Warehouse: “This is of particular benefit to those homeowners who spend most of the daylight hours in an office, away from their homes. With outdoor lighting, those with limited opportunity to sit back and experience the beauty and tranquillity of their garden, can now enjoy their home’s entire living spaces, both indoors and out, during the day and the night.”

POOL LIGHTING
Pool lighting tips
“A swimming pool is often the focal point for any outdoor entertainment area, and making use of pool lights in and around this area reduces limitations on entertaining or swimming after the sun has gone down. Having adequate pool lighting will add ambiance to any outdoor setting, as well as provide safety for guests, children and visiting family,” explains Melissa Davidson from leading local lighting supplier, The Lighting Warehouse.

She notes that many pool owners have opted to replace their built-in incandescent pool lights with LED globes instead: “Aside from being environmentally friendly, LED lights last longer. They might cost a little more to purchase initially, but their comparatively low energy consumption will end up saving you money in the long run. For a more dramatic effect, The Lighting Warehouse offers special LED pool globes that come with a remote control, whereby you can change from the normalcool white setting to a 14-colour-changing setting to create a kind of underwater light show.”

ENERGY SAVING LIGHTING
How to save electricity on lighting
Research shows that in terms of lighting and electricity consumption in your home, kitchens, living rooms and outdoor lighting are the three biggest energy guzzlers (www.eskomdsm.co.za). Fortunately, lighting is also one of the easiest ways in which you can save energy and cut down on your electricity bills, says Melissa Davidson from The Lighting Warehouse.

Davidson offers some tips on how to green your home’s lighting, and in the process save money on your electricity bill and do your bit for the environment.
